Latest News

New dance figures to be taught starting in January of 2012: On Monday nights, starting January 2, Jerry will be teaching basic 2-step figures. This is from the ground up, so all students and newer club members who want to learn to dance 2-step choreography should come on out. Also starting January 10 and once a month on 2nd Tuesdays, Paul & Linda Robinson of Tulsa will be making the trek up to Joplin to teach Quickstep figures from the ground up. All club members and students are welcome to come on out to the Joplin Square Dance Center, for lessons that start at 7:30.

News [from the December 2011 MRDA Newsletter]

Tanglefooters held its annual Holiday Dinner on December 12. We had a great turnout (65) with great food, great dancing, and lots of red.

Paul and Linda Robinson held their last foxtrot workshop of the year on December 13. They accomplished their goal of teaching all the phase IV moves in foxtrot rhythm. The next workshop will be held the January 10, 2012. Their plan is to begin teaching quickstep and to review the foxtrot figures.

Be making plans to attend our annual spring dance the first weekend in March 2012. We will have it in Carthage instead of in Joplin because of tornado-related issues.

Speaking of the tornado, Tanglefooters has recently donated about $1,300 to the Joplin Public Library to help with losses the library suffered as a result of the storm.

2011-12 Lessons

2011 has been a very difficult year. We began a new series of dance lessons starting Sept. 19, 7:00-8:15 p.m. (Joplin Square Dance Center, 1801 W 2nd). The first lesson is free; $7 per couple thereafter. Lessons began with cha-cha rhythm and then moved on to rumba. In January students will start 2-Step lessons. Anyone who wants to learn 2-step figures should come out. This is for couples of all ages, casual attire.

New Members Join the Club

On August 1, 2011, Tanglefooters held the annual summer dinner, new member induction, and club meeting. About 50 were in attendance, several club members being gone because of their churches’ VBS. Inducted into the club was the first group of graduates. Since many were gone for that night for one reason or another, the second group was inducted on August 8. New members were  presentedwith official Tanglefooters badges as a token of completion of basic lessons. All told, 16 joined the club, raising the total membership number to 90.

At the annual club meeting, the following officers were elected to a one-year term: Mike & Teri Betts, President; Ken & Billie Jenkins, Vice President; Dale Simpson, Secretary/Treasurer; and Leslie Simpson, Reporter to MRDA.

Due to the loss of the Senior Center and increased hall rental costs, the nightly dance fee was raised to $3.50 a person, $7.00 a couple, until such time that the Senior Center is repaired and we return to our traditional rental fee.

Hope Rocks Joplin!

On May 22, 2011, an EF-5 tornado up to a mile wide, packing winds of well over 200 miles an hour, swept through the southern part of Joplin, destroying or severely damaging 30% of the city. Ninety per cent of the structures of the community of Duquesne just east of Joplin were destroyed or severely damaged. The area is reeling but recovering slowly. Tanglefooters held a benefit dance for Joplin area residents on July 17, starting at 7:00 in the evening. Named “Hope Rocks Joplin,” it featured local band This Side Up! playing classic rock, a live auction, a silent auction, and sales of “Hope Rocks Joplin” t-shirts and other items. Admission was free; donations were encouraged. To date (12/27/2011) the club has donated $3717 to the R-VIII district tornado relief fund, and over $1300 to the Joplin Public Library. T-shirts continue to sell well, at $15 apiece.

Facebook page created

The club now has a Facebook site which can be accessed by all Facebook members. It is being populated with photos, links, and information that will be more current than information on this website, for the time being.  If you are a Facebook member, do a Search for Tanglefooters and join up as a “friend.”
